Tomato Dal

Tomato Dal (Tomato Pappu) - simple and flavorful main course dish. Can be served with rice or rotis. Beginner's Favorite dish!
Ingredients:
Toor Dal - 1/2 cup
Water - 1 1/2 cup
Ghee - 3 tsp
Salt - to taste
Turmeric powder - 1/4 tsp
Tomatoes - 2
Onion - 1
Red chillies - 5
Sambar powder - as required
Garlic - 3 pods
Mustard seeds - 1/2 tbsp
Cumin seeds - 1/2 tbsp
Curry leaves - few
Coriander leaves - few
Asafoedita - pinch
Urad dal - 1/4 tsp
Channa dal - 1/4 tsp

Method:
1. Pressure cook dal with garlic, water, tomatoes, onion, salt, turmeric powder, cumin seeds for 3-4 whistles.
2. In a pan, heat ghee and splutter mustard seeds, urad dal, channa dal, asafoedita, curry leaves, red chillies.
3. Add the tadka to cooked dal.
4. Add sambar powder to the dal and boil it till the raw smell goes off.
5. Garnish with coriander leaves.

PS:
Add lemon juice or tamarind juice if the tomatoes are not ripe enough.
